Q Would you describe yourself as a gardener?

No. That would be vain. But I do see myself as a person who loves gardening.

Q When did you start gardening?

I didn’t get a garden until I was 40 and married Stephen [Barlow, an opera conductor], and we bought a house in Lambeth, south London. Up until then I’d lived in a flat with only access to a communal garden. So a garden was something to be devoutly longed for. –more–
