Joanna Lumley has revealed how close she came to not joining the cast of Absolutely Fabulous, after she initially failed to make writer and co-star Jennifer Saunders laugh.
Lumley, 67, who was speaking on Saturday at Wigtown Book Festival, described how she “laughed out loud” when she was first sent the script for the pilot but thought, “they’ll never get it made; I don’t see how they can.
“I went along and met Jennifer, who of course is one of the closest friends I have now, but when you meet her for the first time she is as remote as a sphinx, she doesn’t give anything away. So we went through the scenes and Jennifer’s face didn’t move. I thought ‘this is awful’.
